Drivers & Driving Record

In Ontario, rates are, in part, determined by who is the Principle operator of the motor vehicle and their driving habits.

If someone has many tickets and accidents they are not perceived to be as good a risk as someone who does not have any incidents on their record. It would be unfair not to charge such a person more due to their habits than a good driver because they are likely to cause more claims. The past is a statistically reliable predictor of the future in this area.

Some Public Automobile Plans run by Provincial Governments do not do this as well and the good drivers actually subsidize the poor drivers for political reasons. MPs do not want to be thought of as the bad guys in those Provinces and sometimes losses even get paid out of general tax revenue which again spreads this to the entire population. Ontario has a system that measures this more carefully so the bad drivers pay their fair share and the good drivers are rewarded.

Age and driving experience are also factors. Young single male drivers still cause a large number of serious accidents where large amounts are paid on claims so this group will pay a higher rate for their auto
insurance. Young female drivers have fewer serious accidents and rates are lower for them.
